Buddha Busts - Gift One This Valentine's

The Many Faces of Buddha

I have a small, about 4.5 inches tall, terracotta bust of Buddha on my computer table. Looks really calm, whenever I look at it for a few minutes - I feel relaxed.

Buddhism covers a wide geographical span. You may have noticed different facial features of Buddha statues. It is to be expected. People like to carve out the Gods in their own image. Well Buddha didn't really claim to be a God or Prophet - but that is another topic.

I'd certainly recommend gifting a Buddha bust this Valentine's Day, if you are looking for a Spiritual and/or Religious gift for your Valentine.

Hand Carved Buddha Head Statue by Dots Design $48

Buddha head statue is hand carved out of wood and measures 8 inches tall and 4 inches wide.

The Buddha is often depicted with long ears. There is a symbolic significance to the Buddhas elongated earlobes. In Eastern cultures, large ears are associated with wisdom and revered by others (think Lord Ganesha and in more modern times, Mahatma Gandhi).

These are ears that are big enough to listen to all our tales of suffering. Magnanimity and compassion therefore are also qualities linked to such physical features and the Buddha was certainly the embodiment of these virtues.

Amitabha Buddha

Amitabha is a celestial buddha described in the scriptures of the Mahayana school of Buddhism. Amitabha is the principal buddha in the Pure Land sect, a branch of Buddhism practiced mainly in East Asia, while in Vajrayana Amitabha is known for his longevity attribute and the aggregate of distinguishing (recognition) and the deep awareness of individualities. According to these scriptures, Amitabha possesses infinite merits resulting from good deeds over countless past lives as a bodhisattva named Dharmakara. "Amitabha " is translatable as "Infinite Light," hence Amitabha is often called "The Buddha of Infinite Light."

Amitabha is best known from Japanese Pure Land and Chinese Buddhism, but is also one of the five principle Buddha's in Tantric Buddhism: the Deepest teachings of Tibetan Buddhism.
