Inspiring and informative spiritual books

One of the things you can be almost sure of, when it comes to giving a present to someone into spirituality or a specific religion, is that books are likely to be welcome.

Jesus the King: Understanding the Life and Death of the Son of God

Timothy Keller has been compared to C.S. Lewis - and that's saying something. As a Presbyterian minister has been gathering thousands in his sunday services. As an author he consistently gets hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of five star reviews.

Legible, wise and inspiring are adjectives regularly used to describe his work. I picked the life of Jesus, as this is (or should be) the central focal point for any practicing Christian.

Peace Is Every Step: The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life , by the unconventional Zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, appeals to a wide variety of people. It teaches the basics of mindfulness meditation in a way that is both accessible and non-threatening to those who aren't Buddhists. As Thich Nhat Hanh gained his first renown through his peaceful efforts during the Vietnam war, the title is particularly apt.

Jewelry

When you are part of a religious community, but mix with 'the world' as well, it is often comforting to wear some sort of spiritual or religious jewelry. Usually this is either a pendant reflecting your faith or a ring.

Oracle and Quotes Cards

Oracle cards make great gifts for people who are into spirituality. There are basically two types: quotes-cards and symbolic cards. On quotes cards you can draw a card to serve as your daily affirmation or just to give you some direction in how to deal with issues in your life. The oracle cards - tarot-cards for instance - can be used for more complex types of divination.

I have picked two of each as gift suggestions.

Spiritual Cards - with quotes

Daily Guidance from Your Angels Oracle Cards: 44 cards plus booklet

Angel cards are perhaps the most famous quotes cards out there. Who doesn't love angels? Well, they love us too and want to help us out!

This set requires no training at all: each card has an image of an angel along with basic advice that may apply to your situation. Things like 'play', 'ground yourself', 'new partner', 'ocean' and more. There is always a small paragraph explaining the message further.

Power Thought Cards: A 64 Card Deck (Box Set)

Inspiration to help focus and stay on course. These square cards have mostly positive messages like: 'I trust my inner wisdom', 'I deserve the best', 'there is no blame'.

Spiritual Oracle Cards

These require some training, so if you don't have that, start with a deck that includes a booklet.

Oracle cards are a great way to get some insight into the dynamics of your life problems - where you're at, where you're going, what issues you need to take into account.

Whether it's angels, ascended masters or shaman wisdom you're invoking with your oracle cards - what matters most is interpreting them.

The best oracle card decks include some guidance on how to use them. They will help you find your inner wisdom - the cards only being the pointer.

The best way to interpret oracle cards is to meditate on their symbolism: you need to tap into your own subconscious knowledge of the answer to the questions you are dealing with.

The Rider Tarot Deck

The Rider-Waite tarot deck is the classic tarot deck, used for divination for over a century. It was designed by Pamela Colman Smith from the instructions A. E. Waite, the famous mystic.

This tarot-deck became the standard tarot for the English speaking world.

Universal Tarot of Marseille

In other countries, like the Netherlands, the older Marseille tarot is still used more often. Personally, I preferred this deck during the year that I studied tarot.

Because the symbolism can be interpreted on several levels, oracle cards have - depending on who reads them - a potential for deeper meaning.

Osho Zen Tarot: The Transcendental Game Of Zen

This is a beautiful deck and somewhere between the tarot and the spiritual quotes type. Each card is an illustration of just one thought: 'the creator', 'celebration', 'abundance', 'letting go', 'compromise' etc.

Easy to use and yet the imagery is symbolic enough to help you find your own level of meaning.

Interfaith Gifts - letting all religions coexist

Interfaith presents Featuring the International Peace Symbol

These Interfaith Gifts make ideal presents for those special people in your life, where you want to give something that has a special meaning to them and show you have put some real thought into what you are buying. There's gift ideas for people of all ages and different faiths and religions, but who are united in their commitment to World Peace.

The Interfaith Gifts on this page feature the International Peace Symbol, first designed by Gerald Holtom for the British Nuclear Disarmament Movement in 1958. A Conscientious Objector in World War II, Holtom was a graduate of the Royal College of Art.

The original design featured the Cross associated with the Christian Faith, but this idea was discarded as it had too many wrong associations for a symbol that was meant to represent a belief that transcended across all faiths.

Eventually the symbol incorporated the semaphore signals for N and D set against a circle to represent the Globe.

Polished Peace Symbol Pendant - Unisex Jewelry

This beautiful International Peace Symbol Pendant is made from .925 sterling silver and has a diameter of 37.5 mm, making it large enough for a man to wear.

The Witches' Calendar and Date Book by Llewellyn is a unique project that has been rewarded with great popularity among the pagan and wiccan scene for decades.

The calendar features monthly information on herbs, astrology, spells and rituals. The datebook tops that up with information on the sacred seasons, sabbat, the meaning of colors and their use in ritual etc.

Both are illustrated by Kathleen Edwards.

Live Well, Love Much, Laugh Often - Quotes Gifts

Jewelry, Signs, Mugs and house decoration

I don't think there is any saying that sums up the ideals of our time better than: "Live Well - Love Much - Laugh Often".

But it's not as easy to do as it is to say, so we like to be reminded. The gift ideas on this page do just that, whether it's a bracelet or a sign to put on your wall. When it comes to home decoration, I personally really like the idea of using a sticker format to put this directly on your wall, but there are other options as well.

Keeping a journal is the best way to remind ourselves, I think. It helps put our mind in order when life keeps on rushing us. Keeping a journal is the one form of meditation I have practiced consistently. What better way to unite living in the now and reflecting on your life?

Live Love Laugh BraceletA definition of success...

Often attributed to Robert Louis Stevenson the phrase 'to live well, laugh often and loved much' first appeared in the second edition of 'Heart Throbs' published in 1911. The volume consists of user contributed quotes. Bessie A. Stanley defines success as follows:

He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often, and loved much; who has enjoyed the trust of pure women, the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who has left the world better than he found it, whether an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul; who has always looked for the best in others and given them the best he had; whose life was an inspiration; whose memory a benediction.

Singing Bowl

One of the most popular items in most spiritual households is the singing bowl. It's often used to signal the start and end of a meditation session, and can also be used to meditate ON. Larger singing bowls often have a deeper richer tone and can be heard over a minute long after just one strike.

Tibetan Chimes

While I love the sound of my singing bowl, I find that in practice it's way too big. If I ever start giving mindfulness trainings in my own hall, I will be sure to put it on the altar. For now these Tibetan Chimes are more portable and have a great sound too.

More about choosing a singing bowl.
