A kid in New York is Missing
And you got it from a friend, acquaintance or myspace-bulletin
Date: Jan 6 2007
This is to find a missing child in NYC. I received it as a bulletin, and he reminded me of a child I know. Dunno if u can, but if u can, please repost this as a bulletin
----------------------------------------------------
Missing since Friday. The child’s name is Karl Wilds. Karl lives in the Soundview area with his mother and the Hunts Point area with his father of the Bronx. Please help us find him. If you have any information please call the police. A report has been done at our local precinct.
This is a typical message where everyone with a heart will feel tempted to do as this message asks: resend the message. Think about all the reasons NOT to repost this though:
- This is not dated (friday, but which friday did the kid go missing?)
- How will you find out if the kid has been found and reposting this isn't necessary anymore?
Messages like this get reposted online for YEARS by well meaning people who don't stop to think how useful it would be to repost. Most likely by the time you got that message the kid has been found again.
I got the bulletin without the picture included, but ironically the message did include instructions on how to repost with the picture. This obviously makes reposting even more useless: how do I know what kid is missing or whether he is perhaps working in my local supermarket?
The only way anybody will get me to repost anything of this sort is if the following conditions are met:
- There is an updated website that makes it clear that acting NOW (not two years ago) will make a difference.
- There is every indication on that website of the date the kid went missing (year, month, day) and a date the website was last updated after that.
- The date the website was updated is within a month of my seeing it.
